Improve your indoor reception
written by Jay on Thursday, August 13, 2009
I find that a lot of people get poor cellular reception in their homes. A couple of weeks ago I talked about a way to overcome this using a wireless extender which boosts cellular frequencies into indoor enclosures. Another more affordable way to improve indoor reception is with the use of a bluetooth enabled cordless phone. These cordless phones often allow you to connect at least 2 cellular lines to your cordless phone using bluetooth technology. You can use the cordless phone with a cellular line exclusively, no land line is needed. Simply put the cellphone in the part of the house where you get the best reception, usually near a window. If you get absolutely no reception in your home at all, you should get a wireless extender.
So which bluetooth cordless phone should you get? One of the best on the market right now is the AT&T EP5632 5.8 GHz Digital BlueTooth Enabled Cordless Phone. Besides allowing you to link up to 2 cellular lines, it also allows you to have a conference call between both cellular lines and a landline. The menu is color, customizable, and icon-driven for added configuration simplicity. The EP5632 features selectable ringtones, a lighted keypad, and a spare battery charger. Comes with one handset and is expandable up to 12.

Palm Treo Case
written by Jay on Tuesday, August 11, 2009
The benefits of keeping your Palm Treo in a premium leather case
The #1 benefit of keeping your Palm Treo in a case is protection. A recent study suggests 20% of cell phones don't last more than 18 months due to breakage. That doesn't include the many smart phones that become scratched up due to lack of protection. A premium leather case offers the Palm Treo protection from scratches, and even absorbs shock if your Treo happens to fall. The Palm Horizontal Case includes a belt clip so you don't have to keep it in a bag or your pocket where it's more likely to get scratched or damaged.
Convenience
Convenience is another great reason to get a case for your Palm Treo. Instead of having to dig your Treo out of a bag or your pocket simply and easily remove it from you Palm case with belt clip. For additional convenience the Palm Horizontal Leather Case has an interior pocket for business cards, credit cards, or cash.

What does a wireless extender do?
A wireless extender aka cellular repeater as the name suggests enhances a cellular signal by repeating and extending the signal. Repeaters tend to vary by how far they extend a signal and which frequencies they support. A premium cellular repeater like the ones created by Wireless Extenders can extend a signal by 2,500 square feet and operate on multiple frequencies (800/850 MHz and 1900 MHz) fully supporting 3G.
Components
- A typical cellular repeater will include an outdoor/indoor antenna that captures the cellular signal. This can be on the roof or indoors near a window or in the attic.
- A coax cable is connected to the outdoor/indoor antenna to transfer the signal to a base that amplifies the signal.
- Then another antenna takes the amplified signal and broadcasts it throughout the home.
The system both broadcasts and receives cellular signals greatly increasing the reception you get in your home. Below is a picture of the Wireless Extenders YX510-PCS-CEL Dual-Band Cell Phone Signal Booster, one of the best systems at a reasonable price.

The Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth Headset is the only BT headset I know of that features a detachable second earbud that is used to convert the mono sound headset into a stereo headset. This comes in handy when you want to listen to music and podcasts on your cell phone wirelessly. The second removable earbud also helps to cancel out background noise during phone calls in noisy places.
The Voyager 855 is designed for lengthy work days or long commutes. Its rechargeable lithium polymer battery will give you up to seven hours of talk time and 160 hours of standby time from a single charge. An easy-to-read indicator lets you quickly check your battery level. For extreme convenience, the earpiece features one-touch buttons that put call and music controls -- such volume, mic mute, last-number redial, voice-activated dialing, music pause and play, and track back and forward -- conveniently at your fingertips.

iPhone Protector invisibleSHIELD by Zagg
written by Jay on Saturday, July 11, 2009
Another great way to protect your iPhone is with the invisibleSHIELD by Zagg. It doesn't offer any shock protection like the OtterBox but it won't add any bulk to your iPhone and it offers complete scratch protection for the screen and the chrome backing. The invisibleSHIELD is .2 millimeters thick. The invisibleSHIELD has its origins in the military, where it was used to protect high-speed helicopter blades from dust, dirt and debris. A friend of mine uses invisibleSHIELD and after an entire year of usage her iPhone remains scratchless.

Apple boots a porn App
written by Jay on Thursday, June 25, 2009
It's kind of funny how Apple will give an App the go ahead then decide to boot it out of the App store. It happened with that dumb baby shaking game. Now it's happening with an "adult" game. The game is called "Hottest girls", it shows topless women. The game was supposedly removed from only the USA Apple store, so anyone from outside the USA might be able to get it.
A reviewer from wired.com gave it a negative review not because of the adult theme but because the App seemed "poorly" designed. Still I would like to have the opportunity to try out the game, especially if it was free. Maybe Apple should think harder before they approve a game so they won't have to recall it the same day. Anyway Apple has parental controls built into the iphone so adult games should be available.
Excerpt from the Wired.com article. "The application itself is terrible," tech analyst Charlie Sorrel wrote. "Four photos are shown on screen at once and tapping one will pull a full sized version from the server. From here you can look at it or save it to your photo-roll. There is no slideshow to display a progressive striptease of the same model, so you are limited to one picture at a time before you have to navigate back to the main screen, which shows a lack of understanding as to how a porn app should work. You could of course just use the application for downloading and view the pictures later in the Photos application."

Protecting your IPhone Chromo
written by Jay on Thursday, June 25, 2009
If your the kind of iPhone user that gets scratches on your iPhone's chrome back and edges, but not typically on the touchscreen than the SHIELD Apple 3G/3GS Polycarbonate Slim Fit Case is what you need. But this case does more than protect the chrome of your iPhone it also helps you grip the iphone much more securely so you're less likely to drop your iphone and it is less expensive than the Otterbox at only $8.99(for most colors) - $9.99(for a few other colors), but it doesn't have the drop protection of an Otterbox.

The Shield case is very slim and while covering an iPhone it fits easily into your pocket. The Sheild works well with clear touch screen protection like the iKross Premium Reusable LCD Screen Protector for fuller protector.

The true cost of an Iphone
written by Jay on Thursday, June 25, 2009
Apple's iPhone 3GS cost about $178.09 to manufacture, according to analyst estimates.
A recent tear-down analysis of the new iPhone 3GS found that the hardware components in the 16GB version of the device carried an approximate cost of $172.46. The cost of manufacturing each iPhone was approximately $6.50 per unit.
In the USA, the 16MB iPhone 3GS retails at $199 with a two-year commitment with exclusive carrier AT&T. Customers who do not sign up for the contract must pay $399. In the UK, exclusive carrier O2 is offering the 16GB model for £184.98 with a contract and £440.40 without a contract.
The higher prices being charged for the phone without a contract could reveal how carriers expect to make a profit from the device.

Protecting your IPhone
written by Jay on Friday, June 19, 2009
If you own an iPhone or any kind of cell phone you probably want to protect your asset. You don't want your iPhone all scratched up or abused. The best way to protect it is with a case, but cases often inhibit your ability to use the functions of the iphone without taking it out, and taking it out of the case often leaves the phone vulnerable and defeats the purpose of the case. That's where the Otterbox Defender Semi-Rugged Case comes in. The Otterbox protects your iphone without you ever having to take it out of the case. The Otterbox allows you to use all the functions of the iphone without taking it out of the case, and all the ports are accessible while it's in the case. The Otterbox also comes with a belt clip so you can attach your iphone to your belt.
The Otterbox case absorbs the impact of falls so your iphone doesn't have to. I dropped my iphone in its Otterbox case from 5ft onto a hardwood floor and the case fully protected the phone from scratches and other damages. The Otterbox is worth every penny of its low cost.
